Q. How big does a soak pit need to be?

A. A soak pit is sized to the area it drains, typically your roof and paved surfaces, and how fast your soil absorbs water. We size every pit to your site and council requirements.

Q. Do soak pits work in clay soil?

A. They can, but clay absorbs water very slowly, so a standard pit often isn't enough. In Upper Hutt's clay areas we combine larger soakage areas with subsoil drainage. A soil soakage test shows what your site needs so that we can tailor your solution.

Q. Does a soak pit need council consent in NZ?

A. Usually yes. A soak pit is a drainage asset and new drainage work generally requires a building consent, with the design checked against your council's requirements. As certifying drainlayers we prepare the consent application and arrange inspections so your pit is legal and signed off.

Q. How long does a soak pit last?

A. A properly sized and built soak pit should last 25 years or more. The usual cause of failure is sediment or fine clay clogging the soakage surface over time. Keeping sumps cleaned and the pit wrapped in the right geotextile fabric extends its life significantly.
